According to the US Daily Science website, scientists at St. Michael’s Hospital in Canada and the University of Toronto wrote in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology on the same day that a new study they conducted showed that the most common vitamins in the long run And mineral supplements are not good or harmful to human health.
The researchers conducted a systematic review of data published in English from January 2012 to October 2017 and a single randomized controlled trial. They combed data related to vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 (nicotinic acid), B6, B9 (folic acid), C, D, and mineral beta-carotene, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and selenium supplements.
The results showed that the most common supplements – multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin C – had no advantage in preventing cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke or premature death, and of course, did not increase the risk. Usually, people take vitamins and mineral supplements to increase the nutrients that can be obtained from food.
The study’s lead author, Dr. David Jenkins, said: “We were surprised to find that the positive effects of the most commonly used supplements are so limited – taking a multivitamin, vitamin D, calcium or vitamin C does not cause any harm. But there is no obvious benefit.”
However, the study also found that folic acid and folic acid-containing B vitamins can reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke; taking niacin and antioxidants also has a little effect.
Dr. Jenkins said: “These findings suggest that people should be aware of the supplements they are taking; patients who lack specific vitamins or minerals should also take appropriate supplements according to the doctor’s advice.
